When his term ended, President Andrew Johnson went home to Greeneville, Tennessee after refusing to attend President Ulysses Grant’s Inauguration. Nast turned to Shakespeare once again for King Andy’s “Farewell, a Long Farewell to All My Greatness!” Cardinal Wolsey spoke the line on learning of his dismissal by King Henry VIII, in Shakespeare’s play about that monarch.

It is likely that this cartoon also was an unused relic of the Illustrated Chicago News.
