Nast’s 16 negative depictions of Confederate atrocities during the Civil War were an important factor in energizing Union public opinion, and leading Lincoln to call him “his best recruiting sergeant.” Southern Chivalry was Nast’s most vicious atrocity pictorial, reprising scenes from the War’s commencement — some of which he had portrayed previously.
