After his acquittal and for the rest of his term, Johnson let military reconstruction proceed under General Grant without making waves. Nast depicted him being rejected by the Democratic Party when — his hobby horse destroyed — King Andy uttered the famous last words of Shakespeare’s Richard III in the battle which brought Henry VII to the throne.
