Harper’s Weekly – May 13, 1871
As the Tweed Ring’s power peaked, Nast showed the Boss and his cronies throwing out the old textbooks printed by Harper’s, and substituting new books published by Tweed’s New York Printing Company. This would have cost Harper Brothers at least $50,000 annually if Tweed had not been overthrown. There was some internal debate, but his three brothers stuck by Fletcher Harper who gave them an ultimatum to continue the fight with him or go on without him.
