Nast drew this cartoon in late March or early April, 1865, for the post-dated May issue of Phunny Phellow. Robert E. Lee was trapped in the cage, handing his sword to General Ulysses Grant who had besieged him in Petersburg, VA for ten months. Left to right, the other Union generals were William Sherman, George Thomas, George Meade, and Phil Sheridan.
